Introduction: Oocytes develop in cysts of interconnected cells that undergo breakdown and become surrounded individually by granulosa cells to form primordial follicles. Mechanisms controlling cyst breakdown and primordial follicle formation are not well understood but cell adhesion molecules (CAMs) may a play role.
